What To Do When Your Destination is not Mapped? Use the Nav Beacon

When I first started flying, I would accept missions, and jump to the designated system. Then I would check the left HUD for the destination planet or base, and sometimes it would not be listed. What do you do?

SCAN THE SYSTEM NAV BEACON!

Look at the immediate area around the system's sun until you see the Nav Beacon (or select it in the left hand HUD if it is listed). It should be floating near the sun. Travel to it and disengage supercruise when you are close enough (less than 1Mm).

After exiting supercruise, just getting close to the beacon will not automatically scan it. You need to select the Nav Beacon in your contact list on the left HUD, or, if you happen to see it floating in front of you, select it by targeting it. Incidentally, this is also true of passenger destinations - you must manually target the beacon at the destination before the passenger will give you credit for achieving the goal.

After selecting the beacon, the white targeting brackets should show up around it:

You should see an outline of the beacon floating in your target holographic display. You should hear your computer start to scan it, as well as see it being scanned on the target HUD to the left of the target hologram. If it is not being scanned, try getting closer until it does.

Once it completes the scan, check the left HUD for additional system map information - your mission destination should now be listed.

WHAT IF THERE IS NO NAV BEACON?

If you cannot find a nav beacon, which can happen, then you have two fall back positions:

1. Bring up the system map and see if a mission logo (a gold planet icon in a box) is visible. If so, that is where you need to go. Select the planet or station that has the icon and navigate there.

2. Use your discovery scanner (if you have purchased one). The scanner will map any 'found' stellar bodies as 'unexplored'. You then have to fly to each unexplored planet or moon and scan it up close to identify it.

DON'T HANG AROUND THE NAV BEACON ANY LONGER THAN YOU HAVE TO!

Churn and burn and get out of there. Nav beacons are a hangout for pirate bastards looking for innocent travelers.
